Parent Letter: September 12, 2011 Dear 7th Grade Parents and Guardians: As you know, Confirmation will be celebrated in our parish in the fall of your child’s eighth grade school year. The Bishop will assign the exact date at the end of the summer. Due to the size of the Confirmation class, there will be two sessions, typically 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Specific times for each class will be determined in the fall. The Sacrament of Confirmation for children of catechetical age is conferred upon those who have been baptized, received the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Eucharist, have been instructed in their faith and have demonstrated a capacity and willingness to participate in the life of the church. Religious education and preparation to receive the sacraments is the responsibility of the parents in conjunction with the catechists. We ask each parent to recognize that attendance in PREP class and at Sunday Mass are mandatory requirements for each candidate; catechetical and liturgical experiences are the foundation for full initiation into the Church. Listed below are the seventh grade requirements that must be completed this year. There are two sections – 1. Documentation/Ceremony Details and 2. Student Projects. 1. Documentation/Ceremony Details: Enrollment Promise – due this evening. Confirmation Data Sheet - due January 22, 2012 Fee - $100 due January 22, 2012 – (robes, flowers, programs, etc. & Retreat Fee.) Dresses and skirts must be of the appropriate length for Church. Beware that spiky heels can catch in the carpeting causing tripping. Boys: Dress pants or khakis with golf or dress shirt – tie optional & dress shoes. No jeans, T-shirts or sneakers. All students will wear robes – the girls will wear white and the boys will wear red. The robes will be distributed at Confirmation practice, allowing ample time for ironing, if needed. The robes are rented and must be returned. Immediately following the ceremony, students must return the robes to the school building at which time they will receive their Confirmation certificates. 2. Student Projects: These will be assigned by the teachers throughout the year (due dates are noted). Please know that unacceptable work will be returned to be redone. Letter to Fr. Brainstorming as a class, they will decide how to achieve/fulfill and bring it to life as a service project. (Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, help those imprisoned, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, bury the dead.) No hours will be counted. Counting 20 or 30 or 50 hours in order to “get done” is in direct contrast to the ideal of living a life of service. Confirmation is the beginning of service to the community of God – we are never done! Submit a class end of project report – due March 30. MANDATORY Attendance at Confirmation Retreat – What is a Retreat? A retreat is an experience where children can come together in a relaxed setting to share their faith through activities, discussion and prayer. It offers an experience supplemental to what they are learning at home and in class as they prepare for Confirmation. Saturday, March 24 from 9 am – 3pm. Mark your calendars NOW to SAVE THE DATE! Thank you for your cooperation with these important details surrounding the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me!
