As a means of supporting the Church’s teachings on family life education, beginning in the 2015-16 school year, St. Clement PREP will now offer the RCL Benziger ”Family Life” program to all students in grades 1- 8. As mandated by the Office of the Bishop, this program will replace the ”Virtus – Protecting God’s Children” component that was previously utilized here at St. Clement Parish and throughout the Diocese.
“Family Life” meets the Diocesan commitment to the continued implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, article 12 – “maintain safe environment” in accord with the USCCB guidelines. “Family Life” helps to foster personal growth, Catholic moral development, and respect for life, and centers on the five themes of God’s gifts: family, self, life, love and community.
To introduce the program, a meeting will be held in the beginning of the next school year. A comprehensive overview will be given and questions will be answered. You will be notified (by Email) of the exact date/time after the school year begins. The information will also be posted on the webpage. Your children will be using this textbook of ten short chapters, in addition to the Sadlier Publishers “We Believe” series, used regularly.
The materials for this program include a child’s book, teacher manuals and a parent component which is called “Parent Connect.” I applied for and received a grant from the Diocese which enabled me to purchase a set of books for each grade level and enough manuals for all the teachers. Utilizing the funds in this manner - using the one set of books for each class - is the most cost effective means of covering the materials. However, it is mandated by the Diocese that each parent receive the corresponding “Parent Connect” each year. The cost is included in the Registration fee. In order to keep Registration fees in check going forward, we are asking that the “Parent Connect” be returned each year to eliminate the need to purchase new copies. Details of implementing this program will be discussed at the meeting.
